Calling all Portland pianists and piano-lovers!
We want YOU to get involved.
Pianists 16 or younger: Enter a competition to join us in a music video! Submit your filmed performances of Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag.” We’ll select the winning performance to serve as the basis for our wild and funky three-piano music video, “Maple Leaf Rag Fantasy,” to premiere during the August 16, 2020 virtual piano extravaganza event.
MAPLE LEAF RAG YOUTH COMPETITION Rules
Contestants must be 16 years old or younger on August 16, 2020.
Download the score for “Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin here. (If you already own the score, feel free to use whatever edition you have.)
Please play all repeats. Performance decisions are left to the discretion of the pianist (tempo, swing vs. straight rhythms, dynamics, etc.).
Film yourself playing “Maple Leaf Rag.” The video can be as simple or elaborate as desired. The winning submission will be used in a three-piano music video! (N.B. The submissions will be judged primarily on the musical performance, not the video quality.)
Write 1-3 sentences about what this project—and potential collaboration with us!—means to you.
In addition to being featured in our “Maple Leaf Rag Fantasy” three-piano music video, the winner will appear LIVE during Anderson & Roe’s virtual piano extravaganza for Portland Piano International on August 16, 2020.
Submission deadline: send your video as a YouTube link to Portland Piano International at maryellen@portlandpiano.org by July 24, 2020 (3PM PDT).
