One-of-a-kind concert experiences

In the time of COVID-19, our mission still rings true—in fact, it has never felt more urgent. We’re fired up and more inspired than ever to make classical music a powerful and relevant force in society, even while isolated apart, cross-country.

To that end, in association with Portland Piano International, we’ve created two online concert experiences to capture the in-the-moment essence of live performances. We asked ourselves, “How can we recreate all the things we love about live performances, but in a virtual world?” Crucial to our quest: a strong sense of community, the thrill of risk-taking, and a profound connection with the human condition. We’re resolved to make these virtual events feel impactful, surprising, relevant to our times, highly interactive, and lovingly tailored to the city of Portland.

We need your help! See how you can participate in the festivities, and learn more about the programs below. We can’t wait to connect with you and celebrate the joy of piano music.

Join us August 15 & 16, 2020 (7pm EDT / 4pm PDT) for classical piano music like you’ve NEVER seen before!

preview what’s in store…

We’ve devised innovative, exciting, and thoroughly Anderson & Roe virtual concert experiences to serve as our personal and passionate response to the crisis that has halted the performing arts industry.

Over the two-day festival, look forward to nearly a dozen new music videos, five new Anderson & Roe arrangements, live performances of solo and duo music, curated commentary, question & answer sessions, trivia competitions (with prizes!), and Portland-inspired surprises.

Day I - August 15, 2020

Feast your ears on duo and solo works by Bach, Piazzolla, Beach, and others alongside new pop arrangements and mash-ups from yours truly. At the heart of the program: a cosmic performance of Gerd Kühr’s “Corona Meditation” featuring dozens of local Portland pianists.

Day II - August 16, 2020

Help us title our new multi-piano fantasy based on Balakirev’s Islamey, be amazed by the winner of our youth competition (featured in a wild and funky three-piano music video), laugh to Satie’s piano works narrated by Portland thespians and luminaries, and savor the music of Brahms, Glass, and Portland’s own Ryan Anthony Francis.

…plus a whole lot more!

Calling all Portland pianists and piano-lovers!
We want YOU to get involved.

PIANISTS 16 OR YOUNGER

Enter a competition to join Anderson & Roe in a music video! Submit your filmed performances of Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag” by July 24, 2020. Anderson & Roe will select the winning performance to serve as the basis for their wild and funky three-piano music video, “Maple Leaf Rag Fantasy.” Find competition details here.

PIANISTS OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES

Join Anderson & Roe in a performance of Gerd Kühr’s cosmic Corona Meditation, a work for any number of pianists composed in response to the pandemic. Find more details here. Submission deadline: July 15, 2020.

EVERYONE

Put a bird on it! Submit photos, short films, and/or artwork of birds taken or created while sheltering in place. Please include your names (and ages, if you wish) and send to maryellen@portlandpiano.org by July 15, 2020. Anderson & Roe will incorporate your submissions into a music video featuring their arrangement of “The Cascades” by the acclaimed PNW-originated band Fleet Foxes.

TRIVIA HOUNDS

Start brushing up on your musical knowledge! A handful of participants will be chosen to compete in brief music trivia challenges during both virtual piano extravaganza events. Prizes will be awarded! If interested, please submit your names and a one-sentence bio to maryellen@portlandpiano.org by August 1, 2020.

COCKTAIL LOVERS
